The primary role of the Research Analyst (Security) will be to evaluate and analyse issues such as counter-terrorism and weapons proliferation. The position will also review the progress of reform of the Security Sector in Indonesia. There will also be instances when other transnational matters need to be analysed such as counter narcotics and efforts to tackle people smuggling amongst others.
The job-holder will work in the political team at the British Embassy as well as liaising with Foreign and Commonwealth Office colleagues at other Embassies in the region and those in London, reporting to the Second Secretary at the British Embassy in Jakarta.
This will be an exciting and challenging role in the Embassy, working closely with colleagues in the political, media and communications, defence and commercial teams, as well as the British Council.
Research Analyst
Main duties- Understand and report on the Indonesian government’s long and short-term policy approaches to the security sector environment.
- Analyse and report on the regional strategic security situation and any implications this may have for the UK.
- Maintain an excellent network of senior level contacts; across government, academia, politics, and civil society.
- Spot innovative opportunities to help deliver UK policy priorities and offer advice on handling any associated risks.
- Facilitate bilateral governmental visits and Embassy events.
- Develop strong working relations with all teams in the Embassy, including UK Trade and Investment, DFID and the British Council.
- Willing to start employment with a 1-year fixed term contract
- Degree-holder, preferably with a postgraduate degree, majoring in International Security, International Politics (or similar) discipline
- Preferably 3 years of relevant experience in security sector research, or have experienced a similar role in another Embassy or an international organization
- Strong understanding of the Indonesian political and security scene
- An understanding of international relations and familiarity with the UK would be an advantage
- Excellent communication and networking skills
- Strong English and Indonesian language skills, both oral and written (i.e. IELTS 6.5 or higher).
- Self-motivated and the ability to work independently as well as in a team
- Proficient in MS Office applications
