Starting in the late 19th century, the development of electrification in Indonesia began to be increased when some Dutch company engaged in the sugar factory and the tea factory for the purposes of establishing the power plant itself.
Between the years 1942-1945 saw a shift management of Dutch firms by Japan, after the Dutch surrendered to the Japanese army at the beginning of World War II.
The process of transition of power occurred again at the end of World War II in August 1945, when Japan surrendered to the Allies. Opportunity was used by the youth and workers' labor power through delegation / Employees of Electricity and Gas which, together with the leaders of KNI Center initiative to meet President Soekarno to give these companies to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. On October 27, 1945, President Soekarno Bureau established under the Electricity and Gas Department of Public Works and Power to the power generation capacity of 157.5 MW.
On January 1, 1961, Bureau of Electricity and Gas converted into BPU-PLN (the Governing Body of the State General Electric Company) is engaged in the electricity, gas and coke are dissolved on January 1, 1965. At the same time, 2 (two) companies state that the State Electricity Company (PLN) as managers of state-owned power and Gas Company (PGN) was inaugurated as the manager of the gas.
In 1972, in accordance with Government Regulation No.17, the status of the State Electricity Company (PLN) designated as the General Electric Company and the State as holder of the Electricity Business Authority (PKUK) with the task of providing electricity to the public interest.
In line with Government policies that provide opportunities to the private sector to move in the business of supplying electricity, then since 1994 the status of PLN to switch from the Public Enterprise Corporation (Corporation) as well as PKUK in providing electricity to the public until now.
