In 1913, Liem Seeng Tee, a Chinese immigrant, started making and selling hand-rolled clove cigarettes at his home in Surabaya, Indonesia. The small company is one of the first companies to manufacture and market cigarettes and cigarettes.
Cigarette popularity grew by leaps and bounds. In the early 1930s, Liem Seeng Tee surname once to replace the company name into Sampoerna, which means "perfection". After his business developed fairly well established, Liem Seeng Tee family residences and moved his factory to an abandoned building complex in Surabaya which was then renovated by it.
The building was later also used as a family residence, and until now, the building known as the Garden of Sampoerna is still producing hand-rolled kretek. The building is now also includes a museum that records the history of the Sampoerna family and his business, and is one of the major tourist destinations in Surabaya
The third-generation family of Sampoerna, Sampoerna, the company took over the helm in 1978. Under his control, Sampoerna is growing rapidly and became a public company in 1990 with a modern business structure, and the start time of investment and expansion. Furthermore Sampoerna successfully strengthen its position as one of the leading companies in Indonesia.
Sampoerna's success attracted the attention of Philip Morris International Inc.. ("PMI"), one of the leading tobacco companies in the world. Finally in May 2005, PT Philip Morris Indonesia, an affiliate of PMI, acquired majority ownership of Sampoerna.
